Pet-proof floors and couch
Pet mess is three different problems, and no single machine solves all three. Match the tool to the mess and you buy less.
Daily hair on floors
A robot vacuum earns its place when hair comes back every day and you are not home to chase it. Look for three things:
- A self-emptying dock. Without one, you empty a small bin every run. The eufy E25's station empties into a bag the maker says lasts about 75 days, and it washes and hot-air dries the mop roller and refills clean water.
- Tangle-resistant brushes. Long hair wraps ordinary brush rolls; brushes built for pet hair mean fewer scissors sessions.
- Room for the dock. Self-emptying docks are tall. Measure the wall spot before you order; that is the one reason to skip this kind of machine in a small apartment.
Hard floors and low carpet are where a robot with a mop does its best work. Thick rugs and stairs still need an upright or a stick vacuum.
Accidents on the couch and rugs
A robot cannot clean a pee spot on the sofa or a muddy paw print on the rug. That is a spot cleaner's job: it sprays water and formula, you scrub with the tool, and it suctions the dirty water into its own tank.
- The BISSELL Little Green Mini comes with a stain tool, a self-rinsing hose tool and a small bottle of formula.
- It is for spots and small areas, not whole-room carpet. If the whole carpet needs cleaning, rent or buy a full-size carpet cleaner instead.
- Empty and rinse the dirty tank right after each use; that is the whole maintenance routine.
Car seats, stairs and pet beds count as "spots" too.
Cut the shedding at the source
Less loose undercoat on the dog means less on the couch and in the vacuum. A deshedding tool reaches through the topcoat to the loose undercoat and releases the collected hair with a button.
- The FURminator sizes are by dog weight and coat length; the large, long-hair edition is for dogs over 50 lb with long hair. Other sizes and short-hair editions exist, so match the tool to the dog.
- Skip it for dogs with skin conditions until a vet says otherwise, and never use it on a wet coat.
- Brush outdoors or on a hard floor: the hair comes off in handfuls.
Which do I buy first?
- Hair everywhere, every day, hard floors: the robot vacuum and mop.
- One dog, mostly carpet and couch accidents: the spot cleaner; it is the cheapest of the three and fixes the messes that stain.
- A big long-haired shedder: the deshedding tool first. It costs the least and reduces the load on everything else.
- All three problems: spot cleaner and brush now, robot when you have measured the wall for the dock.
The picks in one place
- eufy E25 robot vacuum and mop: daily floors for busy pet homes; skip it with no wall room for the tall dock.
- BISSELL Little Green Mini: couch, rugs and car seats; skip it if you need whole rooms of carpet cleaned.
- FURminator deShedding tool, large dogs: long-haired dogs over 50 lb; pick the matching size for smaller dogs or short coats.
