Buying Your First Espresso Beans: Roast Date, Bag Size, and Flavor

A first bag of espresso beans should be small, carry tasting notes you already like, and have a roast date you read as a plan, not a deadline. The full checklist is the Your first bag of beans fold of the Home espresso setup guide; the short version is here.

Whole bean or pre-ground

Both espresso machines in the guide ship with a pressurized basket, which makes a fair shot from pre-ground espresso coffee, so a bag sold for espresso or a fine grind is a fair first bag. The trade: you cannot make small adjustments when a shot tastes sour or bitter. If you grind fresh, buy whole bean, grind close to brewing, and read the grinder fold first; espresso needs a much finer, narrower grind range than drip coffee, and the Baratza Encore ESP is the grinder we list with a dedicated espresso range. A drip-only house does not need it.

Roast date: planning, not pass/fail

Roasters commonly suggest using coffee within 2 to 4 weeks of roasting and resting espresso 5 to 7 days after roast, so a bag roasted yesterday is not automatically the best buy today. Use the date to plan the window you will drink it in; your taste decides when it is at its best.

Tasting notes before the label

Pick notes you already like. Chocolate, nut and caramel notes suit milk drinks. Brighter, fruitier coffees need more dialing in, which is a lot to ask of a first bag.

Bag size

Buy a small bag you can finish while it still tastes good. A value bag wastes more than it saves while you learn: by the time the shots are dialed in, the coffee has moved past its window.

Storage

Keep it sealed at room temperature, away from sun, heat and moisture. That is the whole list.

Dialing in

Change one thing at a time: grind, dose, yield or time. With pre-ground coffee the grind is fixed, so the levers are dose, yield and time.

Everything else, from counter measurements to the grinder question and accessory sizes, is in the Home espresso setup guide.
