A reading nook that helps you sleep
The phone is the problem: notifications, blue light, one more scroll. A reading nook is three small changes that make the bed a place you read and then sleep.
Read on something that is not a phone
An e-reader is a book with a light in it. The things that matter at bedtime:
- A glare-free screen with a warm light. The Kindle Paperwhite's 7-inch screen shifts from white to amber, so late reading does not feel like staring at a monitor.
- No apps. No social media, no notifications, nothing to check. That is the feature.
- Battery in weeks, not hours. Up to 12 weeks on one USB-C charge, per Amazon, so it lives on the nightstand and rarely needs the cable.
Skip it if you love the feel of paper books; a bedside lamp and a stack of paperbacks do the same job.
The cover that fits
Kindle covers are model-specific, and the naming trips people up. The fabric cover on our list fits the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition, and the Kindle Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature Edition. It does not fit the 2021-and-earlier Paperwhite or the basic Kindle.
- Find your model in the Kindle's Settings under Device Info, or on the order page, before buying any cover.
- A good cover wakes and sleeps the reader when opened and closed, folds flat behind for one-handed reading, and stays on for charging.
- It adds about 5 oz; the point of an e-reader is that it is light, so skip bulky folio cases with keyboards or stands.
Light and sound for winding down
The last piece is the alarm. A buzzer at 6 a.m. undoes a calm night; a sunrise alarm brightens gradually before it sounds, and the same device plays sleep sounds at night.
- The Hatch Restore 3 has a dimmable clock face, 80+ sleep sounds per Hatch, and a sunrise alarm. Its wind-down routines run through the Hatch app; core features work without the subscription, but new users get a 30-day Hatch+ trial and prompts to keep it.
- Skip it if you would rather not use an app: setup and most routines happen there.
- Put it where the light reaches your face at wake-up time, not behind the e-reader stand.
Setting it up
- Charge the e-reader once, set the warm light to come on at sunset, and turn off the lock-screen ads if your model has them.
- Put the cover on and check the wake/sleep works when you open and close it.
- Set the sunrise alarm for 20 to 30 minutes before you need to be up, and pick one sleep sound; do not change it nightly.
- Move the phone charger out of the bedroom. That is most of the benefit.
The picks in one place
- Kindle Paperwhite, 16 GB: a book, not a tablet, at bedtime; skip it if you prefer paper.
- Kindle Paperwhite fabric cover (2024): fits the 2024 Paperwhite and Colorsoft only.
- Hatch Restore 3: sunrise alarm and sleep sounds in one bedside device; skip it if you want no app.
